Web-based Instruction for Science & Engineering is a UC Berkeley and CITRIS-led partnership of four UC schools including Merced - researchers in the College of Engineering and the School of Education are changing the paradigm of distance education to bring highly-rated courses to community and state schools.
UC WISE consists of a customizable learning management system (LMS), collaborative tools for project-based work, communication and assessment mechanisms, as well as supports for connecting technology and teaching practices. Teachers and students access the system through web-based portals, allowing location-independent access to learning materials. The online format allows for the replacement of didactic presentation of topics (lecturing), either wholly or in part, by targeted small-group or one-on-one instruction (tutoring) in a lab setttingInitial development for UCWISE was funded by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), a far-reaching research and development project assembled by the University of California.
We are very open to collaborators working with our research team. We have benefitted greatly from working with Berkeley undergraduate students. We offer interesting programming projects, a vibrant research community, and other valuable development and research experiences. Please see our list of current opportunities.
We are also eager to work with researchers at other universities as well as dissertation level students at Berkeley and beyond. UC-WISE is in use at Merced area community colleges, and is currently part of the implemenation plan at U. C. Merced. We work closely with the WISE research team.
